Cuba’s Hero Attends Activity on the 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

fernando-en-japónFernando Gonzalez, vice president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, participated today in the events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A statement released by the Cuban embassy in Tokyo said Gonzalez represented Havana in the official peace commemoration ceremony and he also took part in the World Conference against nuclear weapons.

After paying tribute to the victims in the official ceremony held at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, Gonzalez called for a full, transparent, verifiable and irreversible disarmament. Also participating in the event was Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Kim Won-soo, and others.

In front of the massive audience Gonzalez also reiterated Cuba’s commitment to the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Delegates came from many countries including Germany, South Korea and China.

Annually Cuba is represented in this important event, as recognition to its historic commitment in fighting this destructive weapon. Gonzalez was accompanied by Cuban ambassador to Japan, Marcos Rodriguez.

During his time in Japan the hero of Cuba participated in extensive activities including meetings with the Japanese Communist Party, lawyers, parliamentarians, and friends of Cuba, especially those who supported the cause of the Cuban Five.
