A political coalition made up of mostly Colombian parties announced today their support for the peace process signing a pact of unity concerning the effort taking place.
The bloc, officially established yesterday at the Presidential Palace, emerged from the meeting with the specific of working towards a resolution of the long running conflict in Colombia.
Representatives from the full spectrum have signed on to the effort with the exception of the Democratic Center led by former President, Alvaro Uribe. Despite their political differences with President Juan Manuel Santos all the parties represented in the Congress have expressed their support for peace. The U Party (National Unity), Liberal Party, Radial Change Party, Conservative Party, Green Alliance Party, the Alternative Democratic Pole, MIRA, ASI, MAIS (gathering indigenous people) and Opcion Cuidadada Party, all agreed on the need to be member of the coalition.
Since 2012, the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), have been meeting in Cuba, to find a negotiated solution to the confrontation. The hope is that the talks could come to a satisfactory conclusion in the coming months.
Congress people, human rights defenders, activists, and other voices of the national stage have stressed the need to achieve a great deal capable of supporting peacekeeping talks with the insurgency, and the implementation of the consensus arising from such meetings in the postwar period. Another task of the newly formed bloc will be to counter sign any agreement made between the FARC and the government. Colombians have been living in the condition of war for more 50 years, while six million people remain displaced from their homes and thousands more are missing.
