On March 20, a brigade of fourteen activists, including the Hero of the Republic of Cuba Rene Gonzalez, climbed to the summit of Pico Duarte to call for the release of Puerto Rican independence freedom fighter Oscar Lopez Rivera. Located in the Dominican Republic, the mountain is over 10,000 feet and is the highest peak in all of the Antilles.

The exhausting ascent to Pico Duarte is over 30 miles long with many dramatic peaks and valleys along the way. The action was timed to coincide with the visit of U.S. President Barack Obama to Cuba. Obama, who is so fond of talking to other countries about human rights, could – as he did with the Cuban 5, have Oscar released with one stroke of the pen. He has now served over 34 years in U.S. federal prison making him the longest serving political prisoner from Latin America.
