Remembering, Being Unified and Active is the Recipe to Make Macri Retreat

By Carlos Aznárez on May 11, 2017

With the malignancy of those who have been sheltered for years and protected now by President Macri’s government, while he has once again tried to sneak through the Supreme Court the concept of overthrowing one of the greatest achievements of Argentine society; the punishment for those who murdered, tortured, exiled and disappeared thousands of Argentinians during the dirty military dictatorship of the 1970’s.

In this way Macri was fulfilling a mandate that has emerged from his own background and ideology. Macri and his family was linked and had a profitable business in the middle of the massacre. He also has tried to connect the idea of reducing the quantity of the deaths when everybody knows that the number is at least 30,000 and eliminating March 24 as the day of popular homage to those who were punished and tortured to death for wanting a more inclusive and different world.

And last of all he has counted on the complicity of judges linked to his ilk, of leaving confessed killers free so that they can keep terrorizing a population that suffers daily all kinds of violence linked to state complicity including hunger, unemployment, lack of a good health system, the downfall of public education, trigger-happy cops, sexism and other similar scourges.

However the hateful right that the governing PRO (Macri’s party) represent once again crashed up against the ethical wall of the tenacious and brave militancy of those who stand for human rights.

Over half a million men and women of all ages decided to take it to the streets against what was being snatched in the dark by judicial and governmental offices. And they did it with the conviction to stop Macri once again and to expose him for what he is.

It is extraordinary to witness the power of mobilization that has vanquished once again the threat against the future of the population having to deal with murderers walking amongst us instead of fulfilling their sentences for their heinous crimes. Again the white scarf of the Mothers and Grand Mothers, that became a symbol of struggle and resistance, generated a massive endorsement that forced every major city and small town to turn into a brave force against the official prepotency. At last after many years of insisting with different formations there was only one and giant march, with organized columns by the thousands of new generations of committed people. Included in the demonstration were party flags from all the popular and left campus organization and also with the fresh introduction of improvised signs designed by hand by young people needing to express their repudiation of the nostalgia for the dictatorship that has been prevalent since the Macri government arrived in December of 2015. These are young people who by their own means are yelling against this bourgeois democracy and its institutions but also against the obsolete parties that don’t represent them either.

The May Square in front of Casa Rosada was once again filled under the umbrella of human rights organizations, which beyond their lamentable divisions, are the only reference that the majority of people respect. Precisely because when the society was muted by terror there emerged the first voices of pain, anger and decision so that impunity would not keep advancing.  These organizations exist thanks to the thousands of patriots who came before them and fought for a society without exploited people.

Now Macrism is trying to vanish -for a second time- the legacy of this militancy that since 1955 and on struggled against the dictatorships and fought for the Revolution.

In these circumstances it is important to become aware of the value that struggle and popular mobilization, reacting to the evil and the camouflaged speeches of the government, is sending a message to the world. It was through this strength of expression that the Senate was forced to absolutely reject the judicial ruling. The power of the people on May 10 even forced Macri to unlink from the polemic that was trying to re write history.

Once again the perverse game of seeing what will stick was used by Macri’s administration but we should never allow this to get to this point. The movement must generate more awareness before the atrocities of power are tried again.  Unity from below is essential. Fighting against the representatives of the very capitalism that murdered yesterday, murders today and will keep murdering in the future. If we cannot stop it from the root society will be facing serious and greater problems. The tolerance limit should be our memory to ensure that these formulas of denial extracted from Nazism have no chance of reappearing, just like it was this time when the white scarfs and militant legacy of 30,000 people served as an unfailing shield.
