Candidate Nominations for Municipal Assemblies has begun in Cuba

The nomination of candidates for delegates to the municipal assemblies of People’s Power begins today in Cuba, with the holding of a pilot meeting in each municipality.

In these meetings, people at the base will nominate the citizens who, due to their merits and abilities, will form the candidacy for the elections of October 22nd, when Cubans will vote for their representatives at these municipal instances of government.

Electoral authorities of the island agree that this stage constitutes the most transcendental and complex of the general election process, its starting point and a genuine manifestation of democratic participation.

Hence, they stressed, the importance of massively attending the nomination assemblies scheduled to take place until September 30, in the 45,688 polling stations approved throughout the country, as part of the 12,515 existing constituencies.

In accordance with the Cuban Electoral Law, the nominating assemblies of candidates for delegates are organized, directed and chaired by the corresponding Electoral Commissions of the Circumscription.

The legal body itself establishes that all participating voters have the right to propose candidates to delegates to municipal assemblies of People’s Power, and that among these is nominated who obtains more votes.

It stipulates that all men and women, including members of armed institutes who are in full enjoyment of their political rights, may be permanently resident in the country for a period of not less than five years before the elections, are 16 years of age and older, and are not included in the exceptions provided for in the Constitution and the law. ”

Those who are mentally incapacitated or are deprived of their liberty, even when they are enjoying probation, extra-criminal or pass-time leave, those who are serving a sanction dependent on deprivation of liberty, or those who have been punished deprivation of his political rights, during the time established by the courts, as accessory sanction, from the fulfillment of his main sanction.
