December 23, 2017

According to the United Nations (UN), some 64 social leaders have been assassinated until the beginning of December 2017, local media reported.

Colombian media reported the death of another social leader. Gonzalo Antonio Martínez Guisao, 35 years old, was allegedly assassinated on Wednesday, the 20th of this month by paramilitaries.

Apparently, when the communal and peasant leader traveled in a camper-type vehicle in the urban area of the city of Carepa, department of Antioquia, (northwest), he was intercepted by paramilitaries on the road that leads to Saiza, Tierralta, Córdoba (north), where he was killed by four bullet wounds, after being tortured.

Peasant organizations and committees of human rights defenders condemned the atrocious crime and demanded that the authorities provide protection to social leaders in the Sinú region and in the national territory.

“There is no dismissal of a possible mass displacement, due to the presence of criminals in the area of the events,” said human rights defenders.

This is the second social leader killed in that region. The other victim was a leader in the village of Saiza (Tierralta), José Yimer Cartagena, vice president of the Peasant Association for the Development of Alto Sinú (Asodecas).

According to the Office of the United Nations (UN), some 64 social leaders have been assassinated since the beginning of December 2017, local media reported.
