Nicolás Maduro will have his second term in office after winning the presidential election this Sunday in Venezuela with more than 5,823,728 million votes.

With a projected participation percentage of 48% of the population, the candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) will remain for another six years at the Miraflores Palace.

Opposition candidate Henri Falcón was second in the presidential race, with more than 1.8 million votes. Before knowing the result, the candidate of Alliance Progresista (AP) refused to recognize the results.

Evangelical pastor Javier Bertucci received just over 900,000 votes and, minutes before the first official bulletin of the Electoral Power was issued, he assured that he would recognize the results if the margin with respect to the pro-government candidate was broad enough.

In the vicinity of the Government Palace, supporters of President Maduro went out to celebrate the electoral triumph.

They underestimated me.

“How much have they underestimated the Venezuelan people, how much have they underestimated me? But here we are standing in triumph (…) It is the fourth victory in a row,” said the reelected president.

Maduro went on to reject that Falcón ignored the results of the election even before the first bulletin was released. “We should not look for much honor or morality in the opposition because at the beginning or at the end they always break before the imperial threat.”

“It is regrettable, truly regrettable, because the people of Venezuela must be respected,” added the Head of State, who stressed that Venezuelans went out to vote “in a free and sovereign manner.”

Dialog

Maduro also confirmed that the first thing he will do in his second term is to call a new round of dialogue with the opposition and with all sectors of the country. In addition, he promised to take on the economic issue as his priority.

“You will see me all over the country to activate the engines of the economy. It is not easy, it is no small thing to talk about the war they have waged on our people even by  not voting in these elections,” denounced the president, who promised “justice” to those who tried to boycott the election.

“I believe in a new beginning, I believe in peace and coexistence in order to move forward together,” he said.
