Venezuela’s Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, suffered minor injuries in an accident on Tuesday afternoon, while she was deployed to Cumanacoa, Sucre state, attending to families affected by hurricane Beryl. President Nicolás Maduro announced the news, highlighting that Rodríguez was working with the community when the incident occurred.
Rodríguez was accompanied by a work team and several residents of Cumanacoa when a strong wind surge from the storm knocked down several trees. Unfortunately, one of them fell on those present, causing multiple blows to the vice-president.
Despite the mishap, Rodriguez is conscious and in good spirits, and is continuing to work assessing the damage, according to Maduro. “She just wrote to me, she sent her greetings,” said the president.
Earlier, the vice president had announced her departure from Caracas to the areas affected by hurricane Beryl. “We are leaving at this moment with a commission of ministers to attend to the situation generated by the rains derived from the hurricane, to see the situation and what will be needed”, she declared.
Rodriguez explained that President Maduro had been coordinating since early morning the necessary actions together with the Governor of the state of Sucre, Gilberto Pinto, and the Mayor of Cumanacoa, to respond to the emergency.
The situation in Cumanacoa remains critical due to the passage of hurricane Beryl that has wreaked havoc through the Caribbean Sea. So far in Venezuela, the heavy rains have caused severe damage, leaving three people dead, five missing and more than 3,000 homes affected. Maduro has ordered the immediate activation of all public security and risk management agencies to assist the affected population.
