the presidents of Mexico and ColombiaMexican Head of State Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her solidarity with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, regarding the recently initiated and unconstitutional investigation of the National Electoral Council for his 2022 presidential campaign.

In her usual morning conference held at the National Palace, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed her solidarity Wednesday with her Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, who denounced a coup d’état, and described the investigation approved against him as an injustice.

The head of the Mexican Executive highlighted: “our solidarity with President Petro, he is the only progressive president Colombia has ever had”.

And added: “They are calling it a coup d’état because it takes place outside the laws of Colombia”.

She questioned that the investigation is just opened now two years after the election in which Petro won the presidency by popular vote. The Colombian president is accused of alleged prohibited financing and exceeding campaign expenses by up to 1.2 million dollars.

The investigation was approved on Tuesday, October 8, and a few minutes later President Petro announced that this marked the beginning of the coup d’état.

“All popular organizations in the country must enter into permanent assembly. The time for the generalized mobilization of the Colombian people has arrived. The constitutional president of Colombia elected by popular vote orders the public force not to raise a single weapon against the people”, the president of Colombia commented shortly after the result of the National Electoral Council (CNE) was announced.
