Yesterday afternoon, Havana’s Malecon was dressed in color. Thousands of children, students, workers and the people, together with the President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel and members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, paid tribute to Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán, Commander of the People. It was a fitting tribute to the great leader of the Vanguard and reaffirming their commitment to the Revolution on the 65th anniversary of his death.

Remembered as a simple, humorous, self-sacrificing man of strong revolutionary convictions, with high values such as identity, sense of belonging and human dignity, he was one of the most loved and respected leaders, unconditionally devoted to the ideology of the Cuban Revolution that he contributed to create.

Expeditionary of the Granma and fighter of the Sierra Maestra, Camilio was a man of Fidel’s confidence and an inseparable friend of Che. All that and much more was reflected in the thousands of flowers that were thrown into the sea to pay tribute to that young rebel whose plane fell into the sea in the middle of a storm and whose remains were never found.

His unfortunate and premature death permeated with mystery was a hard blow for the Cuban people and the nascent Revolution. But regardless this revolutionary island never forgets its heroes.

In his memory hundreds of thousands of Camilo’s would be born, not only in Cuba, but in other countries of the world, his name is a flame and emblem of the Revolution.
