A Black Friday Offer? Trump Wants to Buy Greenland

December 24, 2024.

Greenland ‘s Prime Minister Mute Egede responded Monday to the provocations of Donald Trump, who said that “control” of the Danish island – home to mineral and oil reserves – is “an absolute necessity” for the United States. “Greenland is ours. We are not, and never will be, for sale. We will not long struggle for freedom” Egede stated in a statement.

On Sunday, Donald Trump announced on social media Ken Howery as the next ambassador to Denmark. In releasing the news, he said that “in the interest of National Security and Freedom throughout the world, the United States believes that possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

Already during his first term, Trump had on several occasions expressed his desire to buy Greenland, at a time when China had redoubled its investments in the Danish island. In 2018, he even succeeded in preventing Beijing from financing the construction of three airports in Greenland.

In 2019, the Greenland authorities reminded him that the island was not for sale, statements that upset the then president, who ended up canceling a state visit he had planned to Denmark.

Under the leadership of Joe Biden, the United States made a U-turn and announced that it did not want to buy the territory, but rather to strengthen ties.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, has been an autonomous Danish territory since 1979, with its own parliament, about 55,000 inhabitants and a small independence movement. More than half of Greenland’s public budget is financed by Denmark.
