Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is also the president of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), announced that over 5 million Venezuelans have participated in grassroots assemblies by 6:00 PM Saturday to nominate candidates for the May 25 elections.
During an interview with the state outlet Venezolana de Televisión on Saturday, March 15, he said, “The people are setting an example for the world. Today, they prove that the Bolivarian Revolution is at its peak. A people capable of such sustained displays of consciousness, participation, and protagonism confirms that we are on the correct path, on the right side of history. This Revolution will endure. The more empires attack us, the stronger will be our unity and resolve.”
Assemblies
President Maduro hailed the process as a “total and beautiful success,” stating: “We are building our homeland. This is the true democracy feared by empires, the democracy that they have failed to destroy. These assemblies are prelude to the democratic, institutional, and constitutional triumph of May 25.”
The president issued a challenge to opposition groups: “I dare the opposition to engage the people beyond elections. Stop seeking votes only to later cry fraud.”
For the successful conduction of the assemblies, he congratulated PSUV members and sympathizers, the allied parties of the Great Patriotic Pole coalition, such as Homeland for All (PPT), Communist Party, Christian ORA Movement, Tupamaros Revolutionary Movement, and Alliance for Change. He also felicitated PSUV General Secretary Diosdado Cabello.
Next steps
President Maduro confirmed an 8:00 PM meeting with Cabello and senior PSUV leadership to finalize candidate lists for governors, deputies, and legislative councils ahead of the May 25 elections.
