The Faustino Perez Hospital in the western Cuban province of Matanzas offers specialized consultation for persons interested in transgender transition, as a new service.
Patients may access the service with a remission from the TransCuba Network of the National Sexual Education Center (CENESEX), which has assisted trans persons in Cuba since 2001.
A multidisciplinary medical team considers clinical and psychological characteristics of patients, along with complementary exams to kick off the genre-change procedure on scientific grounds.
Psychologist Laura Maria Hernandez said that the genre-transition process implies physical and mental changes on the person involved and on its close environment, which has usually been marked by sexist patterns leading to violent scenes.
The specialist added that most patients request advice for surgery or to inoculate feminine or masculine hormones accordingly, which is a process requiring medical assistance.
However, the psychologist said that it is a great achievement for the health service in Matanzas province to join Havana and eastern Santiago de Cuba in this service for the trans community based on a genre perspective.
