Children’s Day in Palestine, which was commemorated this Saturday, was marked by sadness, as the death of 19,000 children aged 0 to 7 years old in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli aggression in the occupied territories on October 7, 2023, was confirmed.
The figure was released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) this Saturday, in a statement confirming that Israel systematically attacks infants and, on multiple occasions, uses them as “human shields, depriving them of education and stripping them of their national identity in the occupied territories.”
These facts contribute to a serious violation of human rights and the rights of children at the international level, which is why the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has described the Strip as “the true embodiment of hell on Earth for the one million children who live there, and the situation is getting worse every day”.
The Ministry of Health, for its part, has counted that 1,150 babies have died since the beginning of the aggression in 2023, while 274 babies have been born during the bombings and attacks. In addition, 876 children under the age of one have died during these genocidal acts.
The figure continues to rise, even more so now that the ceasefire has been completely ignored following the statements made by Israel and the United States about their interest in taking over the territory, forcibly displacing its residents and relocating them to other neighboring nations.
The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said that “the suffering of the people of Gaza must stop. Since the breakdown of the ceasefire, more than 300 children have been killed. Israel’s month-long aid blockade threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.”
The Ministry of Health also reported that, in the current context, 195,000 Palestinian children are surviving in a situation of severe food insecurity and 345,000 in a catastrophic phase, with 12,000 suffering from acute malnutrition.
Children in Havana Paint a Mural for Children’s Day in Palestine
In tribute to International Palestinian Children’s Day, a group of Cubans and friends from various nations gathered this Saturday in a project for life.
Brushes and colors give life to the mural that will adorn one of the facades of the Juan Manuel Márquez pediatric hospital in Havana, Cuba, as a way of demanding peace for Palestine on International Palestinian Children’s Day, which is commemorated every April 5.
“It’s very sad, and no one deserves to live like this just because of disputes. In the mural we are depicting different aspects of what we learned at school,” said student Amelia de la Caridad Pérez Mesa.
Another student, Ameli Ramos Castellanos emphasized: “I always think that one day the Palestinians will be able to survive and stop suffering. I trust that, at least, they have faith that one day they will be able to continue living.”
The president of the Cuban Association of the United Nations, Norma Goicochea Estenoz, declared that “it hurts Cuban civil society, it hurts Cuban mothers; because I am a mother and I am a grandmother. I think of my daughter and my granddaughters. It also hurts that there is so much silence, because silence makes one an accomplice. And it hurts that great democracies even prohibit people from demonstrating in favor of the right of Palestine to live, of the right of the children and women of Palestine to live.”
