Gustavo Petro
The newly elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said it is necessary to normalize relations with Venezuela. In his first interview granted to a Colombian media, he told Cambio that the border issue is his main concern.
“Because there is a strong, very strong illegality going on there”, he pointed out while referring to the area of Cúcuta and its possible use in terms of industrialization. “In other words, because of our political difficulties between nations, we are not taking advantage of the enormous territorial resources that exists there”.
Another key issue that concerns the two Bolivarian nations is the Colombian-Venezuelan company Monómeros, kidnapped by the Guaidó clan in complicity with the previous government. Petro explained that the fertilizer producing company he is very important to the country agricultural production and, therefore, necessary to address hunger in his country. “The financial asphyxia that this company has suffered has it paralyzed and so now we have to import fertilizers at three times the value.
The border and the company Monómeros are the initial main knots needing to be untied between the governments of President Maduro and Gustavo Petro. It is worth reminding that the relations between both countries deteriorated and became more complex with his predecessor, Iván Duque, who bowed to the US imperial agenda and made Colombia a center of operations to plan the assassination of the Venezuelan president.
