Regular readers of materials produced by Cuba’s Center for International Policy Research (CIPI) will recall that issue 013 (New Era) of the journal Cuadernos de Nuestra América was dedicated to scientific exchange between Cuba and the United States. This volume is the only one to date that has been translated in its entirety into English. Given the success of that project, we at the center decided to prepare a similar one dedicated to cultural exchange between the two countries. We were in the process of reaching out to potential authors when the current U.S. administration took office, which has sought, among other impossible goals, to sever and disregard all ties between the two nations and peoples. Just 36 years ago, with the collapse of the USSR and the so-called socialist bloc, Cubans, organized under the guidance of the CIA and other federal agencies in Miami, began a special celebration under the slogan “Cuba next.” What they expected did not happen in 1990, nor in 1991. Twenty-four months after the initial predictions, some began to wonder why the force of gravity wasn’t working in the Cuban case. (more…)

Since the United States took illegal action against Venezuela on January 3, and especially after the White House designated Cuba as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” on January 29 to justify actions against third parties that seek to maintain normal relations with the island, a new specialty in Cuban futurology has emerged. The approach of the midterm elections in the United States (the entire House of Representatives, one-third of the Senate, and a similar number of governorships), scheduled for November 3 of this year, invites researchers, journalists, and the general public to make predictions about the likely results. Historically, these elections have been considered a kind of barometer for the party in power, which in most cases in recent periods has lost more seats than it has gained. (more…)

The State of the Union address, which takes place every year in the plenary session of the US House of Representatives, is a political exercise that has been used for decades to present the executive branch’s main proposals and concerns to the legislative branch. As political polarization has increased in that country, the staging has evolved into an exhibitionist platform, where, in addition to slogans, personalities are projected who appear the next day in the headlines of the main (mis)information media.
