July 14, 2023 from Havana
The International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples, composed of men and women of good will, advocates for human dignity, peace and brotherhood among peoples, respectfully addresses you:
We ask the MEPs of the European Parliament to reject Resolution 2023/2744(RSP), which will be debated on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
We appeal to your conscience to avoid committing a great injustice and a grave political error against a small, peaceful and sovereign country like Cuba, which has given the world the greatest proof of humanism and solidarity.
When humanity was struggling between life and death in the midst of the worst pandemic caused by Covid-19, it was the small, besieged and blockaded Cuba that offered its doctors, saving tens of thousands of lives around the world. The Italian population of Turin was a grateful witness.
When others were profiting and enriching themselves in the midst of death, Cuba offered the world not one, but three highly effective Anti-Covid vaccines of its own, with which it managed to immunize its population and obtain the lowest mortality rate in the world.
Despite the fact that the United States denied Cuba the purchase of masks, gloves, syringes, Red Zone protection equipment and pulmonary respirators, little Cuba together with its talented scientists managed to create its own vaccines, save the lives of its people and offer them to humanity.
In these difficult years for the whole world, the U.S. blockade of Cuba has intensified with the application of 243 sanctions aimed at strangling its economy in order to provoke a change of government to suit Washington’s interests. The suffering caused to the Cuban population is difficult to narrate in a letter.
Whoever claims that the shortage of food, medicine or fuel is due to the failure of the Cuban government is lying with malice aforethought and disrespecting human intelligence. We know of no other nation in history that has suffered for more than 60 years an economic, commercial and financial blockade, classified as genocide, the longest in Humanity, that has survived and has the majority support of its people.
If the responsibility for the shortage situation lies with the prevailing socialist system in Cuba, the United States should eliminate the blockade, the extraterritorial laws, the sanctions and the inclusion in the list of countries that allegedly promote terrorism (SSOT) to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the Cuban government’s system.
The United Nations General Assembly has been voting for 31 years on the Resolution presented by Cuba to put an end to the blockade, approved by an absolute majority, with the exception of the United States and Israel.
Those of us who are witnesses of the daily sufferings of the Cuban people due to the cruelty of the obsessive and failed policy of the United States in its eagerness to take over Cuba; those of us who are in solidarity with the noble example of their peaceful and creative resistance;
We say together with Pope Francis after the meeting in Havana with Patriarch Kirill of the Orthodox Church: “Cuba will be the capital of Unity”.
Unity in the good relations between countries, Unity in friendship and cooperation, Unity in the defense of the Peace that Humanity deserves.
We oppose with all our strength to the offensive, disrespectful and interference Resolution 2023/2744(RSP) that reflects the hatred of those who could never present it before the Honorable National Assembly that represents the Cuban people.
The International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity of Peoples calls on the Honorable Members of the European Parliament to vote against this resolution.
