Through a statement from the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry it was learned Monday that the Venezuelan government reached an agreement with Brazil for that country to take custody of the diplomatic missions of Argentina and Peru that are in Venezuelan territory as of August 1st.
It was also specified that this custody, in addition to the diplomatic offices, includes the goods, archives and representation of Argentine and Peruvian interests in Venezuela.
The decision was taken in accordance with “the principles and purposes of cooperation and mutual respect that govern the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963”, highlights a report by RT en Español.
Departure of diplomatic personnel
This agreement comes after Caracas broke off relations with Lima in response to statements by Peruvian authorities who questioned the triumph of Nicolás Maduro as reelected president, following the results offered by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
Likewise, the South American country decided last week to withdraw diplomatic personnel from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay, and demanded these countries to do the same in Venezuelan territory, after branding their governments as “interfering” for their statements against the Venezuelan electoral system.
For their part, Argentine President Javier Milei and Foreign Minister Diana Mondino have described the Venezuelan elections as “fraud”.
In the midst of these tensions, Brasilia took over Argentina’s diplomatic representation in Caracas last week. After this action, Milei thanked his peer, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, against whom on other occasions he has uttered insults and accusations without evidence.
