Carlos Giménez’s and Mauricio Claver-Carone
While former President Donald Trump distracts himself with his international maneuvers and Elon Musk continues to cut back on the government apparatus and US foreign aid, the anti-Cuban team in the US administration is busy preparing a new offensive to intensify the siege against Cuba.
“Starving” the Cubans
Recently, Cuban-American Congressman Carlos Giménez has called for an even tougher blockade. In public statements, Giménez has called for a suspension of all travel and remittances from the US to Cuba, arguing that every dollar that reaches the island strengthens the regime and that these sources of income must be cut off to “starve the regime” and achieve freedom for the Cuban people. Although he acknowledges that the measures are severe, he insists that “sometimes you have to take difficult measures to achieve what you want in the end.”
It is no coincidence that days after Giménez’s statements, Mauricio Claver-Carone, special envoy for Latin America and former president of the Inter-American Development Bank expelled for corruption, has returned to the forefront of anti-Cuban politics from Miami, the epicenter of the anti-Cuban lobby in the US.
Claver-Carone, known as “Donald Trump’s obsessive bulldog,” has been one of the main strategists behind the 243 suffocating measures imposed on Cuba during Trump’s first term. He now proposes to go “all out,” with “maximum pressure” without loopholes or half measures, under the slogan of “short-term pain for long-term gain.” His strategy is based on applying “more surgical and effective” tools against Cuba, similar to those used against Venezuela, which have proven to be more powerful and have direct side effects.
The Southern Command and the narrative of the Cuban threat
In parallel, Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of the Southern Command, has testified before the US Congress that Cuba represents a “significant threat” to US national security, accusing Havana of strengthening its ties with adversaries such as China and Russia and of using technology to spy on its own population and repress dissent.
Holsey claimed that Cuba encourages irregular migration and weakens regional relations, presenting the Cuban government as a malevolent actor that prefers to maintain alliances with foreign powers rather than resolve its internal economic problems. These statements coincide with the admiral’s previous meeting with the head of the US diplomatic mission in Havana, known for his history of subversive campaigns.
The continuation of a genocidal and cruel policy
The current offensive is nothing more than the continuation of a genocidal policy that the United States has applied against Cuba for more than 60 years. The infamous memorandum by Lester Mallory, Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, established in 1960 the strategy of “starving and disease the Cuban people” to provoke their surrender.
Today, with a more coherent and determined political team, the White House intends to intensify the economic blockade and economic warfare, ignoring the suffering of the Cuban people and seeking to suffocate them in order to subjugate the island’s sovereignty and independence.
The Trump administration’s anti-Cuban team, supported by figures such as Giménez, Claver-Carone, and Holsey, is laying the groundwork for new punitive measures against Cuba, with a level of cynicism, hatred, and contempt reminiscent of the worst moments of the blockade. The strategy is clear: maximum pressure, without half measures, to try to break the resistance of the Cuban people through pain and deprivation.
As the world watches, the empire insists on its policy of aggression and siege, demonstrating that, for them, Cuba’s dignity and sovereignty are an obstacle to be eliminated at any cost. The history of resistance and dignity of the Cuban people continues to be a beacon in the face of this new imperialist onslaught.
