Statement by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) on the Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado
Havana, October 10, 2025
The Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), true to its mission of promoting international solidarity, defending peace and the sovereignty of nations, expresses its strongest rejection of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, an announcement that represents a flagrant distortion of the principles that inspired Alfred Nobel’s creation of this prize.
Far from embodying the values of peace and nonviolence that the Nobel Prize seeks to honor, María Corina Machado’s career is characterized by actions and stances that have contributed to exacerbating tensions and fostering confrontation in Latin America. In particular, Machado has expressed explicit support for U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, promoting an interventionist agenda that undermines the self-determination of peoples and violates international law. This position not only ignores the principles of the United Nations Charter but also represents a direct threat to regional stability, aligning itself with geopolitical interests that have destabilized sovereign nations in the past.
Furthermore, her role in encouraging violent protests, such as the notorious “guarimbas” in Venezuela between 2014 and 2017, demonstrates a pattern of inciting internal destabilization that resulted in irreparable human losses, extensive material damage, and a climate of social polarization. These actions, far from seeking dialogue and reconciliation, have prioritized confrontation and chaos as political tools, completely contradicting the pacifist spirit of the Nobel Prize winner.
ICAP believes that this award, rather than recognizing genuine contributions to world peace, becomes a propaganda tool that legitimizes hegemonic narratives and erodes the legitimate efforts of peoples for social justice and independence. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to solidarity among free and sovereign nations and call on the international community to reject such manipulations that pervert the true meaning of peace.
For solidarity and true peace,
Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP)

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel rejects awarding Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has rejected the decision to award Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, saying it clearly discredits the distinction.
“It is shameful that this Prize is awarded in 2025 to a person who instigated military intervention in her homeland and, in recent years, street protests in which people were burned alive,” the Cuban president stated on social media.
He also asserted that “the politicization, bias, and discrediting of the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee has reached unimaginable limits.”
“We firmly reject this political maneuver that attempts to single out Venezuela and undermine its Bolivarian leadership, led by its legitimate President, Nicolás Maduro Moros,” Díaz-Canel stated.
This Friday, María Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Norwegian Committee’s decision, for “tirelessly promoting the rights of the Venezuelan people and fighting to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The Oslo-based Committee selected María Corina Machado from a group of 338 candidates, including 244 prominent figures and 94 organizations.
