It is not strange that one or another intellectual endeavor or artistic production provoke violent reactions among extremists of the Cuban-American community in Miami. In that city, works by renowned Cuban painters have been destroyed, books burned in piles, or musical performances canceled due to the threat of terrorist attacks — and from time to time a bulldozer crushes records in the street by an artist disowned for his political positions. On December 12 to 13, 2022, an evidentiary hearing in the case of The United States v. Alex Saab was heard before Judge Robert Scola in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The only issue in the hearing was the question of whether Mr. Saab is entitled to diplomatic immunity, a question which, if resolved in his favor, would lead to his release from custody. I had the opportunity to be in the courtroom to witness this hearing, and it was both fascinating and revealing. (more…)

From the first line here I’m going to make it clear that I don’t follow soccer with the same passion as many of my colleagues and friends. Nor am I a Barcelona or Madrid fan. I admire the sport for the art and feelings it raises to such incredible levels. Of the players, I admit I am a fan of Lionel Messi not because he is number one in the world (which he is), but because I am a passionate admirer of Maradona and no one comes closer than Messi to that soccer God.
