Ernest Hemingway learned in Cuba that the best way to get through a hurricane is to have your ears tuned to a battery-powered radio and keep your hands busy with a bottle of rum and a hammer to nail down doors and windows. The American writer appropriated the typical jargon of Cuban meteorologists and fishermen who speak of “the sea” in the feminine and of the hurricane as a demon or evil sorcerer, and who, when a storm leaves the island, usually say that “it entered in the channel” or that “it crossed the land.” (more…)

Brazil: Lula Returns to Bahia and Gathers Thousands for a Walk in the Capital

Late Wednesday afternoon presidential candidate Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) returned to Salvador for another campaign program. The former president chose the state of Bahia  to start a series of activities in the Northeast part of Brazil, a region where he won in all the states in the first round. In Bahia, the Lula won 69.7% of the votes, while Bolsonaro gained 24.3%. Of Bahia’s 417 municipalities, Lula won in 415. (more…)

Fifteen days after the passage of Hurricane Ian through western Cuba, authorities, technicians, neighbors, and entire communities are continuing to work tirelessly to reestablish the services most demanded by the population, and much remains to be done.
