Foreign Ministers of Peru and Venezuela Meet to Consolidate Comprehensive Relations

August 1, 2021

Venezuelan Foreign Minister and his Peruvian counterpart, meet to strengthen ties between Caracas and Lima.

During a meeting held on Friday in Lima on the occasion of the inauguration of the president-elect of the South American country, Pedro Castillo, the head of Venezuelan diplomacy Jorge Arreaza and his Peruvian counterpart Héctor Béjar  discussed the “recovery of comprehensive relations” between the two countries.

In a message published on his Twitter account, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister emphasized that during the meeting they discussed trade, policies for the care of migrants and the need to strengthen the mechanisms of union in the Latin American region.

Chancellor Béjar, an 85-year-old writer and sociologist, replaces Allan Wagner in the office of Foreign Affairs of Peru, and becomes the first minister to be sworn in as part of the new cabinet, headed by Guido Bellido.

This meeting marked a historic milestone as these countries had broken off their bilateral relations, now Castillo has several challenges both domestically and in foreign policy to maintain good relations with Peru’s neighboring countries.

This significant announcement marks a shift in Peru’s foreign policy, whose previous government recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country’s interim president not the legitimate Bolivarian government of Nicholas Maduro.

Castillo’s victory adds Peru to the Latin American left, represented by countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua. All in all, the Peruvian professor has received greetings even from the other side of the ideological spectrum, such as Colombia and Ecuador.
