Cuban President in Guantanamo: “Neither Alone nor Abandoned”

“We are doing all this in the midst of a policy of maximum pressure from the United States,” Díaz-Canel denounces in tour of Guantánamo.

Yesterday Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, together with Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, arrived in Guantánamo to see firsthand the progress of the recovery in the province after being hit by Tropical Storm Oscar.

The president exchanged with the people of San Antonio del Sur, where he inquired about the progress of the recovery of vital services, talked with residents about the experience of the hurricane and confirmed to all that the State and the Government, together with the Cuban people, are committed to the recovery.

Díaz-Canel, accompanied by several ministers and officials of Central State Administration Agencies, as well as by the main authorities of the province, check on the ground the most agile and efficient ways to solve the problems generated by the hurricane and guarantee the attention to the victims and the Guantanamera population. Díaz-Canel, also President of the National Defense Council insisted that the reports of the Organs and Groups be oriented towards the follow-up of the actions approved for implementation, indicated the need to strengthen the structures of the two most affected municipalities, Imías and San Antonio del Sur, from the province of Guantánamo itself, and considered it a priority to follow up on the possible effects of the water runoff, to orient an environmental study based on the specificities marked by this meteor, to proceed with the reinforcement of food and food processing, based on what was approved by the extraordinary National Defense Council.

During the exchange, he called to guarantee the correct organization of national and international donations, by the corresponding organisms. Likewise, he requested the implementation of the financial measures approved with respect to bonuses and taxes, the distribution of resources to support the supply of water to the population and the lifting of the effects on roads, taking into account the guidelines of the corresponding working group.

The Cuban President underscored the need to properly identify the resources for the work on affected houses, bridges and roads; and ratified the importance of maintaining the vitality of the health services in any circumstance.

Likewise, he referred to the approved agreement to extend the recess of activities in some sectors until next Monday, as well as those of teachers.

Guantanamo Province

He considered that it is a priority to work quickly in the work of sanitation of the territories. He said that the daily check-ups on the progress of the recovery after the hurricane’s passage through Guantánamo will be maintained, and once a week this will be carried out in the eastern territory.

“We are living moments of contingency that are not insurmountable”, he added, “we are doing all this in the midst of a policy of maximum pressure from the United States, which has been accompanied and supported by a campaign of media intoxication, trying to demonstrate a failed and incompetent state”.

All the moments of the Revolution have been difficult and in all those moments we have overcome them, and all those moments also leave us a legacy of teaching, of lessons, which are part of the political heritage of the Cuban nation to face situations like these.”

The situation in which the SEN operates due to the financial stress to which we have been subjected, constitutes something unprecedented in the world” –said Díaz-Canel. Unilateral measures that have never been applied to anyone on the planet, something that we denounced five years ago and that continues to this day.

He emphasized that the government is focused on intense efforts to look for fuel supplies, seeking the support of sister countries, and actions to alleviate the effects on the population, with sensitivity, with concern and occupation, with constancy, without rest, and also with courage, without defeatism, with conviction, without pessimism in the face of so much harassment and perversity.

Díaz-Canel emphasized that “now the first thing is, among all of us and with the support brigades that they will have, to solve everything that is immediate – fallen trees, power lines, lifting of affected houses, and to guarantee communications”.

Contingents of linemen from all the provinces moved to the eastern end of the country to collaborate in the restoration of the electric service in the area.

Finally, he reiterated his recognition to the people, their capacity of resistance and fortitude, their understanding and defense of unity.

“That decision and willingness to work tirelessly to overcome this situation we ratify it, with a condition of non-surrender, and with a condition also of victory, which always accompanies us as a legacy of our Revolution, and so we will continue in combat,” he concluded.

Cuba Extends Solidarity with Guantanamo Province Hit by Tropical Storm Oscar

Meanwhile Cuban organizations and institutions continue today to collect donations to support families affected by the passage of tropical storm Oscar in Guantanamo province.

Following the call made by the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and several entities and citizen initiatives, it was possible to collect clothes, toiletries, household items, toys and food, which are organized in suitcases for their prompt shipment to the easternmost tip of the country.

More than 600 young people from all the provinces of the country signed up in brigades to help Guantanamo, which is still in a Cyclonic Alarm phase due to the floods caused by the meteorological event.

The first secretary of the Union of Young Communists of Cuba, Meyvis Estévez, highlighted on her social networks that dozens of donations from young people have been received at the headquarters of the organization’s municipal and provincial committees, which will be sent to the most affected territories.

Likewise, the Central Bank of Cuba informed about the creation of several official accounts through which donations in Cuban pesos (CUP) can be made in favor of the victims
