Recent polls has Mexican President Sheinbaum with an approval rating over 80%

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, repudiated the US tariff policy promoted by President Donald Trump. “There is no reason or justification to support this decision,” the president said.

In her usual daily press conference, the Mexican head of state announced that her country will respond to the US tariff policy by which 25% tariffs were imposed, the details of which will be announced next Sunday, the date on which she called on the people of her nation to the Plaza del Zócalo to hold an “informative assembly”.

“There is no reason, support or justification for this decision that will affect our peoples and nations,” said the head of state, adding: ‘cooperation and coordination yes, subordination and interventionism no, Mexico is respected’.

“Last night, the White House published a defamatory and unsubstantiated statement about the Mexican government that we categorically deny and condemn,” Sheinbaum read at the beginning of her press conference in response to Washington’s justification for the new tax policy aimed at Mexico and Canada.

On Monday night, the US government published a statement reporting that President Donald Trump would implement tariffs on Canada and Mexico “under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to combat the threat to US national security, including public health, posed by drug trafficking”.

On the eve, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also responded to the Trump Administration’s decision with a mirror measure consisting of the imposition of 25% tariffs, also as of this Tuesday, on US goods worth US$30 billion, which will increase to US$155 billion in 21 days.

China, meanwhile, described the US tariffs as a typical act of “unilateralism” and “bullying” and announced that a complaint would be filed with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over Washington’s increased tariffs.

In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Finance announced that “a 15% tariff will be applied to chicken, wheat, corn and cotton”. Similarly, it was stated that a rate of 10% will be imposed on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables and dairy products from the United States.
