Deputies from the Unión por la Patria party are pushing for impeachment proceedings against President Javier Milei after he claimed that “Iran is an enemy of Argentina” and declared his “unconditional support” for Israel and the United States amid the war that has intensified violence and crossfire in the Middle East.

“Iran is an enemy of Argentina,” said Milei in the midst of the escalating war. He also said that Israel “is doing the dirty work that others are not doing.” These statements, made while the whole world watches the United States bomb Iranian nuclear facilities, did not go unnoticed by Congress.

Eduardo Toniolli, a national deputy from Unión por la Patria, filed a request for impeachment against the president. “Not only did he say that Iran is our enemy, but he also declared Argentina’s unconditional support for Israel and the United States,” he said. And he warned: “We want to be clear: this is grounds for impeachment.”

According to the deputy, Milei violated current regulations. “The attempt to involve Argentina in an international armed conflict without going through Congress is a violation of all our regulations,” he said. “It is Congress that authorizes, or not, the executive branch to make peace or war.”

This is not the first time this has happened under Milei’s administration. “For much less than this, we filed and initiated impeachment proceedings against Diana Mondino for an agreement that was made in a similar manner to the Foradori-Duncan pact with the United Kingdom through a press statement,” he explained about the Mondino-Lammy pact.

The deputy pointed out that this type of maneuver seeks to evade Congress. “Why is this being done this way? To sidestep Congress, which is a common practice in our government,” he said. “We understand that this is grounds for impeachment. We are going to start working on it.”

He clarified that, although the initiative came from his bloc, they will seek parliamentary support. “It is our initiative, but we will see if we can expand it to other blocs,” he said. And he emphasized: “We believe that this has to be at the center of the stage. One cannot be oblivious to this situation.”

Toniolli also warned of the international consequences that could result from the president’s words. “Any belligerent statement could be taken as a declaration of war,” he warned.

What Javier Milei said about Iran

The president said during a television interview that Iran “is an enemy of Argentina and that if the Asian country develops into a nuclear power, the world will be “in trouble.”

Milei made the statement on Thursday night in an interview with the channel LN+, in the context of the escalating violence between Israel and Iran. “Two attacks: AMIA and the Israeli Embassy. 114 (sic) dead. Iran is an enemy of Argentina,” he said.

“Israel already saved us from Iraq in 1981; Israel saved us from Syria in 2007; and now it is doing so again. Israel, let’s say, is saving Western culture,” said Milei, who also claimed that the country ruled by Netanyahu “is doing the dirty work that others are not doing.”
