Cubans launch launch a signature campaign to demonstrate their commitment to peace, but also their resolve and willingness to defend their sovereignty.
The Deputy Director General for U.S. Affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro García del Toro, has confirmed that a meeting between delegations from Cuba and the United States took place on the Caribbean island.
During a conversation with the newspaper Granma, Garcia del Toro described the issue as “sensitive” and reiterated that it is being handled with discretion. Nevertheless, he confirmed that a meeting between delegations from both countries was recently held in Cuba. According to his account, the U.S. side included assistant secretaries from the State Department, while the Cuban delegation was led at the vice ministerial level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The diplomat emphasized that, contrary to what some international media outlets have reported, neither side set deadlines nor made coercive demands. “All exchanges took place in a respectful and professional manner,” he stated.
In that context, he highlighted that one of the central issues for the Cuban delegation was the removal of the energy blockade against the island. He described it as “an unjustified punishment against the entire Cuban population” and denounced it as a form of international pressure against sovereign countries that maintain trade relations with Cuba, particularly in the area of fuel supply.
My Signature for the Homeland
Meanwhile, the Cuban people continue to show determination in defending their sovereignty and the country’s peace, through initiatives such as “My Signature for the Homeland,” a campaign in response to the hostile policy of the United States toward the island where the people of the country are signing up as an expression of strength and support for the Cuban government.
Roberto Morales Ojeda, a member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, highlighted on his Facebook profile the importance of this initiative, calling it “an exercise of popular sovereignty in the face of escalating aggression against the country.”
According to Morales Ojeda, the initiative has been promoted by civil society organizations in response to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, as well as media campaigns and disinformation efforts. He noted that by signing the document, “citizens exercise a right and fulfill their constitutional duty to defend the nation.”
He also stressed that the proposal strengthens national unity by building a common front against disinformation. He pointed out that the initiative coincides with symbolic dates such as the 65th anniversary of the victory at Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs) and the centenary of the birth of Commander Fidel Castro Ruz.
“The signature campaign is a tool of political communication that reflects the Cuban people’s commitment to peace and exposes campaigns aimed at distorting their reality,” Morales Ojeda stated.
He further added that, in an international context marked by media manipulation, this movement demonstrates the importance of developing independent communication tools to defend national sovereignty.
As Cuba faces an unprecedented energy blockade, a tightened economic blockade, and threats of attacks from Washington, the “My Signature for the Homeland” initiative envisions participation from citizens across the country and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Cuba’s independence and self-determination in the face of external pressures.
