Sovereign Cuba
WE REAFFIRM OUR SOLIDARITY!
A few months ago, on our own initiative, we collected signatures from figures in the scientific, political, artistic, and intellectual communities—leaders with deep humanistic commitments—to issue a strong global protest against the U.S. blockade of Cuba, which has been in place for over sixty years.
These days, some media outlets are once again singling us out—the four of us, by name—for that letter of protest, claiming, moreover, that we are part of the Cuban propaganda apparatus. Well, let it be known that today we reaffirm our protest and expand upon it with even greater conviction and emphasis. And we are certain that all those figures who joined us with their signatures would do so now with the same conviction.
The criminal blockade against Cuba, manifested in hundreds of imperialist atrocities that take the form of threats, sanctions, slander, and economic and political harassment, is compounded by recent destabilizing schemes financed from the White House and South Florida, with a particular focus on Cuban youth. There is no limit to their baseness and stupidity. It is not fair that the Cuban people should suffer the criminal irrationality of the U.S. empire, nor is it acceptable to remain silent in the face of the desperate situation to which Cuba is subjected, as it grapples with problems induced by the blockade and related issues multiplying endlessly.
The empire’s plan is to subdue Cuba through hunger, unsanitary conditions, energy shortages, and a lack of basic technology, supplies, and spare parts. The empire’s plan is to erase, at all costs, the Cuban example of humanism and revolutionary defiance. The empire’s plan is for the executioners’ hatred to triumph over the rebels’ dignity, to suffocate the Cuban economy, and to inflict suffering on its people so that they will turn against the revolutionary government.
The Donald Trump administration alone issued 243 sanctions, and Joe Biden was unable and unwilling to alter the inhumane nature of these sanctions, reaching the height of the most arrogant insensitivity during the worst moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. Washington has arrogantly ignored the annual condemnation of the blockade by the United Nations General Assembly, which demands an end to this inhumane practice.
From the very heart of the empire, hordes of “dissidents,” “opponents,” and “critics”—camouflaged with all manner of rhetoric about “human rights,” “freedom of expression,” and the “democratic” spirit—have been sponsored with millions of dollars… They operate in the newsrooms of “newspapers,” “news programs,” and “social media” to peddle their disinformation—a commodity paid for by criminal interests. They yearn to operate within Cuba, publicized with the backing of the “international press,” to damage the image of the revolution, justify the criminal blockade, and legitimize all manner of interventions. To isolate Cuba, turning it into the scene of the perfect crime that no one ever found out about.
Without a shred of shame, they squander millions of dollars to promote internal subversion, calling for civil disobedience, anarchy, and chaos, with the sole aim of overthrowing the current political system and establishing one that serves only their own interests. Washington cares nothing for the immense scientific achievements of the revolution, which, among other things, ensured that within a few weeks Cuba becomes the first country in the world to have its entire population vaccinated against COVID-19, using its own vaccines. This is despite the fact that Washington did everything in its power to prevent Cuba from even acquiring the syringes needed to administer them. We cannot remain silent in the face of this hell that Cuba is enduring.
We, reaffirming what has been said and raising our voices once more, call once again on the U.S. government to end the inhumane blockade against Cuba and to cease its attempts to destabilize a nation that has never taken actions against its security; much less has it interfered in its internal affairs, nor called on U.S. citizens to subvert the established order, despite the many serious internal social problems this world power faces.
We reaffirm our love for Cuba so that its brotherly people may know it, for they have taught us through their titanic example of resistance, fortitude, and greatness. Let the revolutionary people of Cuba know this, for in these few lines is expressed the outcry of millions of brothers and sisters in solidarity and a wealth of fraternal emotions grateful for Cuba’s example of solidarity with all sister nations—in Angola as well as in Venezuela or Mexico, to mention just one geopolitical and historical axis of a new kind in time and space.
Emphasizing our love for the Cuban Revolution, we reaffirm what has been said, which is unwavering and progressive.
