Overwhelming Victory for Cuba at the UN General Assembly

The vote on the resolution before the UN General Assembly — calling for an end to the U.S. blockade of Cuba — represented another overwhelming victory for Cuba. This marks the 34th time that the vast majority of  countries of the world have stood up for the blockaded island nation.

After debates on Tuesday and today, Wednesday, the vote was taken:

130 countries voted in favor of ending the U.S. blockade, 17 countries voted against (in effect, voting for maintaining Washington’s blockade against Cuba) and 25 nations abstained. A few other countries did not vote at all including longtime ally Venezuela.

This overwhelming show of support comes despite a despicable heavy handed campaign of threats of sanctions to countries voting in favor of Cuba, orchestrated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
