An Impregnable Castle

By Atilio A. Boron on June 9, 2021

Pedro Castillo reaches the final stretch of the electoral recount with a difference of some 80,000 votes in his favor. The only thing missing is the official ratification of his victory, something that should be resolved in the next hours. The ambiguity of the figure is due to the infinitesimal variation that could result from the examination of observed tally sheets, incorrectly filled out or with illegible signatures. (more…)

The COVID-19 pandemic has made us meditate in many directions; it has made us realize, once again, the vulnerability of our species, and the need to work united and selflessly.

In order to seek experiences and stop replicating mistakes, the current pandemic has motivated the dusting off of similar episodes. Such reviews allow us to affirm that there is nothing new in noticing how a virus is capable of drastically changing the course of human life. (more…)

Rural Teacher Pedro Castillo Poised to Write a New Chapter in Peru’s History

By Medea Benjamin and Leonardo Flores on June 8, 2021 from Lima

With his wide-brimmed peasant hat and oversized teacher’s pencil held high, Peru’s Pedro Castillo has been traveling the country exhorting voters to get behind a call that has been particularly urgent during this devastating pandemic: “No más pobres en un país rico” – No more poor people in a rich country. In a cliffhanger of an election with a huge urban-rural and class divide, it appears that the rural teacher, farmer and union leader is about to make history by defeating–by less than one percent–powerful far-right candidate Keiko Fujimori, scion of the country’s political “Fujimori dynasty.” (more…)

The Great Global Reset: Back to the Welfare State

By Pasqualina Curcio on June 7, 2021

It is not by chance that we have recently heard rulers and UN spokespersons tirelessly referring to the Welfare State and the need for a new “social contract”. They frame this discourse in the post-pandemic world and in what they have called “a new normal”. It is not that it is fashionable to talk about the “Welfare State” and that is why they repeat it, no, they are following a line, a decision, that comes, no more and no less, from the no more than 1,000 great billionaires and world leaders who annually meet at the Davos Economic Forum. By Marc Vandepitte on June 8, 2021

A remarkable finding that of all countries of the Americas the ones that are hit by heavy economic sanctions imposed by the US are doing much better in the fight against COVID-19. One thing for sure is that the pandemic has exposed the crisis of the neoliberal and capitalist model. (more…)
