As the people of the United States head to the polls, people across the world are left to wonder how a Donald Trump or Kamala Harris victory will impact their countries, given the global hegemon’s central role in geopolitics. This is especially true in the socialist Republic of Cuba, which for over 65 years, has faced a comprehensive economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the US government and maintained continuously by different Democratic and Republican administrations. Introduction
In September 2024, the United Nations (UN) launched a call for a Pact for the Future to guide the achievement of global development goals for humanity. Around the same time, in mid-October 2024, the 25th anniversary of the Budapest World Science Conference was celebrated. This event, held under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Science Council (ISC), was the greatest effort by the global scientific community to alert society and governments around the world to the opportunity to choose a commitment and priority to promote ways of achieving sustainable development and to provide the world with a code of conduct and a framework for action that could lead to the creation and consolidation of a global knowledge society, which in turn could build a sustainable future (UNESCO, 2000). The “senior official” who preferred to remain anonymous knows as well as all of us that what is needed to advance U.S. relations with Cuba is political will. In the Caribbean we call it “pants”.

On March 17, extraordinary events took place in Cuba, which once again received disproportionate coverage in the social networks and some foreign media considering the type of disasters we are experiencing in today’s world. They are “extraordinary in Cuba” because this has not been a country where the forces of law and order walk with long guns in the streets, there are no armored cars to confront demonstrations with strong jets of water, nor are there cases of loss of eyes due to the use of rubber bullets.
