Ramiro Valdés y Fidel Castro.
Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, uno de los últimos comandantes supervivientes de la Revolución Cubana y uno de los principales artífices de las instituciones que la defendieron frente a seis décadas de guerra, bloqueo y subversión por parte de Estados Unidos, falleció en la mañana del 21 de junio de 2026 en La Habana. Tenía 94 años. El Partido Comunista de Cuba y el Gobierno cubano anunciaron su fallecimiento. El presidente Miguel Díaz-Canel escribió que la pérdida del Comandante de la Revolución «duele profundamente, como la de un padre». (more…)

The announcement of Cuba’s new package of economic transformations has generated intense debate both within Cuba and among supporters of the Revolution internationally. Some have expressed concern that aspects of the reforms represent a retreat toward capitalism, a weakening of socialist principles, or even a concession to the relentless pressure of U.S. imperialism. Such concerns should not be dismissed. They arise from a genuine commitment to the principles that have defined the Cuban Revolution and an understandable apprehension about the dangers that accompany any expansion of market mechanisms. Revolutionary struggles around the world have always inspired admiration and support among the popular movements of the Western capitalist countries. Authentic Western progressive opinion defends the ideals of equality among people, brotherhood among nations, non-aggression and self-determination of peoples. However. from the perspective of the anti-democratic Western ruling elites, revolutionary processes present a double threat. First of all, they challenge the powerful political and economic dominance over the majority world of Western corporate and financial élites. Secondly, successful revolutions offer models of a more just society that responds to the aspirations and needs of the majority and not to the petty interests of a small, greedy elite. (more…)

One hundred blockades around Bolivia were mounted by the Indigenous —in a nation where they are the majority— demanding a return to the communal socialism practiced during the years of Evo Morales, 2006 to 2019. This week a state of siege or “state of exception” has cut that number to fifty. The president’s turn to violence lacks parliamentary approval and is hence illegal. (more…)
