Those who do not live in war zones or in suffocated countries are forced to live life as if there is nothing strange about what is happening around us. When we read about war, it is disconnected from our lives, and many of us want to stop listening to anything about the human misery caused by weapons or by sanctions. The scholasticism of the academic and the hushed tones of the diplomat are silenced as the bomb and the bank wage war against the planet. After authorising the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima (Japan) on 6 August 1945, US President Harry S. Truman announced on the radio: ‘If [the Japanese] do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth’. (more…)

I remember the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, Francisco was two years old, his thin legs and swollen feet were covered in sores. Straw blond hair stuck to his head as he listlessly nursed from his teenage mother’s breast. He weighed 13 ½ pounds.
It was the summer of 1999, and I was weighing babies in Nueva Vida. I’d come to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch to help in any way I could through the Jubilee House Community and its project in Nicaragua, the Center for Development in Central America (JHC-CDCA). (more…)

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has escalated his protest against Israel’s military operations in Gaza by ordering the Navy to intercept and block all coal shipments leaving Colombian ports en route to Israel. This move comes nearly a year after his government issued a formal decree in August 2024 banning coal exports to Israel, a measure intended to express Colombia’s rejection of what Petro has repeatedly called a “genocidal” offensive against the Palestinian population.
