The Trump administration’s decision to pursue an indictment of former Cuban President Raul Castro (2008–2018) over the shoot-down of two Brothers to the Rescue aircraft three decades ago has drawn attention amid broader allegations of U.S. double standards. Analysts and political figures point to the contrast between this legal action and reported U.S. military operations in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that has destroyed small boats and resulted in nearly 200 deaths, without an ounce of legal accountability. The Shootdown of February 24, 1996
On that day, the Cuban Air Force shot down two aircraft (Cessna 337 model—known as the O-2 in its military version—used by the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and later in El Salvador, as was specifically the case with these two.) They were piloted by members of a violent anti-Cuban group. The light aircraft were within Cuban airspace. (more…)

That double standard is once again on full display as the Trump administration moves to indict former Cuban President Raúl Castro for the shoot-down of two planes 30 years ago — even as the U.S. military regularly blows up boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, killing nearly 200 people with impunity. The Axios website published a report yesterday allegedly based on “classified intelligence” claiming that the Cuban government had purchased more than 300 drones from Russia and Iran to attack the military enclave that the United States illegally maintains on Cuban territory in Guantánamo, as well as alleged U.S. naval targets and even locations in Florida. This hoax is presented against the backdrop of Washington’s baseless accusations that the island poses a “threat” to the superpower. (more…)
