The bellicose mayor of Miami, Francis Suárez, who in July 2021 called for bombing first and then invading Cuba “humanitarianly” on the ruins of its cities, is now being echoed by the disastrous US demagogues Carlos Gimenes and the convert María Elvira Salazar, US representatives who are loudly demanding that the island be wiped off the map in the name of peace from the grave and US-style democracy. When Edith M. Lederer ― a UN press-room fixture since Vietnam ― files a wire, the voice of Uncle Sam still echoes through the copy. Her latest piece for the Associated Press claims that Cuba’s global health brigades amount to “forced labor.” The accusation doesn’t come from a patients’ union or a medical watchdog; it drips straight from Senator Marco Rubio’s podium, yet Lederer repeats it verbatim, without pausing to verify whether the hundreds of thousands who have queued for Cuban care consider their physicians enslaved or emancipatory. As Cubans try to deal with the recent rate hikes of phone services they have set up a problem solving collaboration between ETECSA and a panel of university students as a way to improve communication accessibility in the shadow of the Blockade.
