There is no such thing as a purely natural disaster, especially in a country under siege. Likewise, the response to any disaster is always mediated by social, political, and even geopolitical factors. Following the devastating 1812 earthquake that occurred during the independence struggle, Simón Bolívar said: “If nature opposes us, we will fight against it and make it obey us.” Today, this remark can sound jarring—like a strange anti-ecological outburst—but what Bolívar meant was that the strategic project of emancipation must remain in the forefront and guide our actions, even when confronting a natural challenge. A Cuba Special Search and Rescue Brigade prepares to leave for Venezuela.
Venezuela was just beginning to recover from the wounds left by the January 3 attack when a new tragedy struck the country once again. On that day, U.S. bombs rocked Caracas and La Guaira, leaving more than a hundred dead. Among them were 32 Cuban fighters who lost their lives defending Venezuelan soil. Months later, while the nation was still seeking solace in its grief, the earthquakes of June 24 opened a new chapter of loss and uncertainty. (more…)

In the first months of 2026, Venezuela has been the victim of two traumatic events. First, on January 3, the military attack known as “Operation Absolute Resolution,” launched by the U.S. government against Caracas and, to a lesser extent, other cities such as La Guaira. Ten days before the tragedy in Venezuela, my mother sent me a planner. On the first page, in her own handwriting, it reads:
