For the First Time in Four Decades, Chile Does not Commemorate the Coup Against Allende

Chile’s far-right President, José Antonio Kast, ignored the 53rd anniversary of the September 11, 1973, coup d’état, when General Augusto Pinochet (1915–2006) overthrew the government of Salvador Allende (1970–1973); yesterday, for the first time since the return to democracy, there was no official commemoration for the tens of thousands of victims of the dictatorship. In contrast, organizations representing the families of detainees, the disappeared, and political prisoners, as well as universities, memorial sites, and the center-left, did hold several ceremonies. Cuba: Everyday Stories That Don’t Make the Headlines

The Trump Administration tries its hardest to portray the Cuban people as being broken and defeated as they face a full blown blockade that has gone on for over 65 years. Marco Rubio rants and raves every Thursday as he tightens it down in new ways of deprivation. Meanwhile the Cuban people, as they endure these hardships, are anything but defeated. Here is just one story of thousands where Cubans are improvising and connecting on the community level. Most of these stories go untold. They take place without media attention or credit but they are a fundamental way of operating with a collective consciousness to overcome this economic war against them.
