The new president of Peru Pedro Castillo has declared that he will make timely and permanent follow-ups to the appointed ministers and that he will not allow anyone to steal a penny of Peruvian funds. After receiving the first dose of the anti-virus vaccine, he called on the people of Peru to stand behind him and help the executive appointed by the new administration that began last July 28.
He made it clear that the old ways of governing have been left behind including the habit of doing politics behind closed doors as well. He knows that “there are certain fears of those who still do not know us”.
The President and his wife, Lilia Paredes, received the first dose of the vaccine in the first day of a vaccination campaign against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus for that went on for 60 continuous hours, in a place located in the popular neighborhood of San Juan de Lurigancho.
Castillo was received with signs of solidarity and together with his wife he waited his turn like any other citizen, after which he thanked the medical staff and said that he had fulfilled a civic duty and commitment to health.
It is time to guarantee our life and health’, he said, calling on the population to get vaccinated, prioritizing health, the right to life, comparing it to the right to education, and essential in counteracting the third wave of contagions that threatens the country.
Reminding everyone of his commitment to support the works of regional and municipal governments, the head of state warned governors and mayors that they must complete the vaccination campaign in their jurisdictions before requesting such support.
“I have come to receive the Sinopharm vaccine because I have faith not only in this vaccine but in all those acquired by the State”, making his comment in obvious allusion to the conservative campaign against the Chinese antidote.
As in other countries, the anti vaccine campaign is promoted by conservative sectors and in Peru in particular by the biologist Ernesto Bustamante, a right-wing parliamentarian who, during the recent electoral campaign, together with a television station he is affiliated with, started a media offensive to discredit the Sinopharm vaccine.
The Minister of Health, Hernando Cevallos, pointed out that the said drug has an efficacy of more than 90 percent, proven by its application to all Peruvian medical personnel and endorsed by the World Health Organization and various scientific centers in the world.
