After a day that started with tension, due to the fence erected around the building where Argentina Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK) lives by the Buenos Aires government in the early hours, the police repressed hundreds of her supporters with water canons and rubber bullets when they tried to cross the fence at the intersection of Juncal and Uruguay. The demonstration had grown through the day as people came out to show their solidarity with the Vice President after the recent political lawfare attack against her aimed to send her to prison.
In a letter published in the networks, CFK explained how since 2015 her house was the target of demonstrations by violent followers of right wing president Murcio Macri and the Buenos Aires police never intervened to protect her
Cristina Kirchner pointed to Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, Chief of Government of the City of Buenos Aires after the installation of the fence in the vicinity of her home and said “For the Macristas protection, for the Peronistas fences”.
Text of her Letter
“On December 9, 2015 when I finished my second term as President of the Nation and I was heading to my apartment to spend the night and leave the next day to my home in the south, but I could not do it. The corner was full of Macrista militants and sympathizers, very violent, who insulted and threatened me. That night I had to sleep at my daughter’s house in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Monserrat. From then on, the corner of Juncal and Uruguay was the object of permanent concentrations of small groups of Macrista sympathizers with threatening and aggressive attitudes, complete with loudspeakers and microphones they amplified insults, threats and promises of death.
In all those years, Mr. Larreta’s police never intervened.
“Today I woke up with the corner of my house literally under siege. The fences put up by Mr. Larreta are something more than preventing free circulation. They are something more than besieging the Vice President of the Nation. They want to prohibit absolutely peaceful and joyful demonstrations of love and support, which take place in the face of the already undeniable persecution of the judicial party.
Mr. Larreta’s logic is the same logic of the judicial party. For the Macristas: care and protection. For the Peronists: fences, infantry of the city police and even sticks, tear gas and pepper spray as on Monday night. What was said that day at night was right: they never were and never will be democratic.”
It was obvious that the fence was to prevent popular sectors from continuing to show her their affection and support. In addition, the gesture of the city government was seen by the militants of the Frente de Todos and Kirchnerism as an attempt to besiege the former president and symbolically imprison her.
This explains why a group of demonstrators broke down the fences placed by the officers and advanced in the direction of Cristina Fernandez’s residence, against which the police cordon subsequently advanced. According to local media, the police also fired rubber bullets when they tried to close the way to Cristina’s supporters.
Following these events, more police were reported to have arrived in the area, as well as an increasing number of demonstrators. A leader of the Frente Patria Grande, Juan Grabois, assured the media that the people wanted to massively express their affection and for that reason will remain at the corner of the vice-president’s house.
President Fernandez condemned the police repression by repudiating the violent actions of the Buenos Aires City Police and blamed the Buenos Aires Government for the repression unleashed. “The operation, far from contributing to the tranquility invoked, generated a climate of insecurity and intimidation. The harassment of the Vice President should cease and guarantee the right to free expression and demonstration of citizens”.
Today Cristina Fernández thanked everyone for the multitude of expressions of solidarity she is receiving in response to the fabricated judicial persecution against her that is driven by neo liberal forces outside of Argentina.
”It has been a long day. There are people who want to exterminate Peronism and do not tolerate people expressing themselves. I want to tell you that even if I lived a thousand years, it will never be enough to thank you for the love, solidarity and loyalty of all of you.” The former president stressed, “Believe me, at this point in my life there is nothing more important than that. I only ask that we never abandon our convictions and above all that indestructible love for the homeland that unites us all (…) Thank you, I love you very much,”
On Friday the Foreign Minister of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero, denounced that the judicial persecution against Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is driven by interests born outside the South American country, after a US senator called for sanctions against her. Through his account on the social network Twitter, the Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship rejected a statement by Senator Ted Cruz, who sent a letter to the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, and accused the Vice-President of allegedly undermining “US national security”.
