Argentina: Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo have Found the 133rd Grandchild

July 28, 2023

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo confirmed the discovery and restitution of the identity of grandson 133. The details of the news, which comes just months before the 40th anniversary of the return of democracy to Argentina, will be given at noon during a conference at the House for Identity of the Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos exESMA.

“It is with immense happiness that we announce the meeting of grandson 133”, announced the human rights organization this morning through its web page, where it also emphasizes that “each confirmation reaffirms that the Argentine people continue to accompany us and have decided to never forget”.

This is the first restitution so far in 2023. The last ones had been in December 2022, when in the same month and only days apart, the biological and historical identities of two children born in captivity and from families who were victims of State terrorism during the last civil-military dictatorship were returned.

These findings are the result of the united work of Grandmothers together with the National Commission for the Right to Identity (Conadi), the National Bank of Genetic Data (BNDG) and the Specialized Unit for Cases of Child Appropriation during State Terrorism (Uficante).

Grandchildren 131 and 132

Until today, the last grandchild recovered was Juan José, son of Mercedes del Valle Morales, 21 years old, disappeared in Tucumán on May 20, 1976.

Juan had been kidnapped when he was 9 months old along with his mother and his two grandparents (Toribia Romero de Morales and José Ramón Morales). His restitution was announced on December 28, 2022.

Less than a week before that, on December 22, the restitution of grandson 131, the son of Lucía Ángela Nadin and Aldo Hugo Quevedo, disappeared in 1977, was announced.
