“A cowardly and dangerous provocation,” Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned the illegal assault on the Venezuelan fishing boat (Carmen Rosa) in Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone by US military forces that threaten peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla also put out a statement calling this a “new imperialist provocation a violation of international law.”
The escalation of warmongering and threats in Caribbean waters is in response to the Trump administration’s infamous excuse to “combat” drug trafficking in Latin America.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 12, when the fishing vessel, manned by nine tuna fishermen, was sailing 48 nautical miles northeast of La Blanquilla Island, well within Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
According to Venezuelan authorities, heavily armed US Marines boarded the fishing vessel in a hostile and illegitimate manner.
“The invaders included eighteen men armed with heavy weapons from the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109), a destroyer equipped with cruise missiles, who occupied the Venezuelan fishing vessel,” denounced Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil.
Venezuelan authorities released images captured by the fishermen themselves showing the moment of the boarding and the presence of the U.S. warship in waters under national jurisdiction.
