Renowned Spanish actor Javier Bardem, nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the miniseries “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez,” used the red carpet  of the Emmy Awards, the most important television awards, to demand support for the Palestinian people and condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh around his neck as a symbol of solidarity with the people of Gaza, Bardem made a forceful appeal to the international community. “We must denounce the urgent situation, Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The International School Association has declared what is happening in Gaza to be genocide, and that is why we must call for a commercial and diplomatic blockade of Israel,” he said.

The actor also called for “sanctions to be imposed on the genocidal state of Israel, not only for the ongoing genocide, but also for the state of apartheid that causes so much heartbreak.” In his speech, Bardem referred to the Film Workers for Palestine collective, a group which, according to him, “more and more people are joining,” with the aim of denouncing “film companies and institutions that either whitewash Israel’s image or justify it.”

“These are the things we wanted to see, that we are doing, and that on a day like today it is important to bring here to the debate,” added the actor, insisting on the urgency of the situation. Bardem also highlighted the severity of the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.

“There are thousands, tens of thousands of children dying of hunger, and they call it self-defense. Now the world finally knows what is happening,“ he said.

Finally, the actor highlighted the need to keep the focus on the tragedy, referring to the more than 60,000 deaths reported in Gaza, to which must be added ”those who are buried under the rubble.“ ”The important thing is that we don’t stop talking about what is important,” he concluded.
