Washington is lobbying with lies and hiding the harm caused by sanctions on Cuban families.

Today, Cuba denounced that Washington is pressuring other countries not to vote in favor of the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning the U.S. blockade against the Caribbean nation.

Through social media, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused the U.S. State Department of following Secretary Marco Rubio´s “corrupt agenda” and “lobbying with lies” to push its allies to withhold support for the UN resolution against the U.S. blockade on Cuba.

Rodriguez added that the United States “seeks to deceive the international community and conceal the serious damage Washington’s sanctions cause to Cuban families,” stressing that the measures have severe economic, financial and commercial repercussions.

Recently, citing an internal State Department cable, Reuters reported that the administration of President Donald Trump is seeking to pressure other countries not to support the Cuban resolution.

To justify this diplomatic maneuver, Washington argues that Cuba is allegedly providing active support to Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, “with up to 5,000 Cubans fighting alongside Moscow’s forces.”

Since 1992, Cuba has presented this resolution every year, calling on the United States to lift its sanctions on the island. Last year, only the U.S. and Israel voted against it, while Moldova abstained.

Although the measure is nonbinding, Havana views the overwhelming support it receives each year from the international community as a diplomatic victory. The Cuban government estimates the cost of U.S. sanctions between March 2024 and February 2025 at $7.56 billion (6.39 billion euros).
