Cuba’s Triumph Over an Aggressive Empire

That an extremely aggressive empire threatens numerous countries with heavy economic and financial sanctions if they do not obey its orders, and that 165 nations have ignored its pressure and voted in the UN General Assembly in favor of the Cuban resolution to end the blockade imposed by the United States, meant a resounding moral victory for the Cuban government and, at the same time, a shameful defeat for the regime of convicted US President Donald Trump.

Washington has been defeated and humiliated 33 times since 1992 in the UN General Assembly, which has voted to support the Resolution on the Need to End the Economic, Commercial, and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States against Cuba, updated every year.

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla

On this occasion, the imperial pressures were open and brazen, as denounced by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, the campaign was aimed not only at distorting Cuba’s image, but also at putting pressure on third countries regarding their position on the blockade, with the objective of creating a climate of misinformation and confusion, provoking demoralization, and generating a feeling of insecurity or fear among UN member states.

Rodríguez Parrilla revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent aggressive, intimidating, and misleading letters to several countries with the aim of forcing them to change their traditional and historic position in support of the resolution against the blockade.

On this occasion, seven countries voted against the resolution and six bowed to US threats, some because they were loyal allies and others out of fear. These were, in addition to the United States, Argentina, Hungary, Israel, North Macedonia, Paraguay, and Ukraine.

Terror and uncertainty about possible “sanctions” also intimidated 12 other countries that abstained from voting: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Morocco, Poland, Moldova, and Romania.

This was another frustrated opportunity that the United States used to try to minimize the overwhelming impact of the blockade, even blaming the Cuban development model and its authorities through manipulation and disinformation operations, mainly on social media.

But the shame, dignity, and courage of the Cuban people and government were exalted before the international community when, once again, the empire suffered 165 defeats from dignified countries that gave their irreversible support to the Caribbean island.

Cuba once again defeated the powerful forces of the empire, and within the United Nations, it raised the flags of freedom, sovereignty, and independence that it has maintained since January 1959. Cuba won and will continue to move forward.
