“It’s not going to happen,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in response to statements made by her US counterpart, Donald Trump, who yesterday said he could launch attacks against Mexico to prevent drugs from entering US territory.
During Tuesday’s morning press conference, when asked about the tycoon’s remarks, the Mexican head of state emphasized that her administration will not request the intervention or support of U.S. troops in the fight against organized crime.
She stated that after Trump’s statements, “there was a clarification (…) Then they issued a statement saying that unless we requested it, they would intervene.
“We are not going to ask for it; we do not want intervention from any foreign government. There is collaboration, there is coordination, but there is no subordination, nor can we allow intervention. The last time the United States came to Mexico with an intervention, it took half the territory,” she remarked.
She insisted: “It’s not that we don’t want support, but not with foreign troops.”
Yesterday, at the White House, the U.S. president said he could launch attacks against Mexico to prevent drugs from entering the United States. “Would I launch attacks in Mexico to stop drug trafficking? No problem! We will do whatever it takes to stop it,” he said.
In this regard, the Mexican president stressed that in her various calls with Trump, she has made it clear that this type of support is not required.
“We have mentioned this many times. In the talks I have had with President Trump, he has said on several occasions: ‘We offer you whatever U.S. military intervention in Mexico you need to combat criminal groups. ’ And I have told him on every occasion that we can collaborate, that we can share information, but that we do not accept intervention from a foreign government.”
Sheinbaum Pardo assured that this same message has been conveyed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“They have understood. The understanding (on security matters between the two countries signed during Rubio’s recent visit to Mexico) is one of collaboration and coordination, and the first points make clear the respect for sovereignty and our territoriality,” said the president.
