Anyone who visits Cuba these days knows how many things, that we take for granted, are scarce or non existent on the blockaded island. As part of the strategy to guarantee the population’s access to essential medicines, Cuba received the first shipment of 81-milligram aspirin produced in the People’s Republic of China through a bilateral cooperation project.
The drug, intended to cover the demand for the Basic Table of Medicines, is the result of a process of evaluation and technology transfer carried out by the Center for the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed) between the Medsol Laboratories of Cuba and the plant of the Chinese company Hubei C&C, in Wuhan.
This milestone consolidates an innovative cooperation model that combines the productive capacity of Hubei C&C – a strategic partner of Cuba’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC) – with a sustainable financing mechanism.
This mechanism uses part of the profits generated by the sales of PPG, the leading product of the Cuban entity involved, to ensure the stability of the supply of this key drug in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
With the arrival of these first batches, their unloading and subsequent distribution to the national network of hospitals and pharmacies began immediately. It is expected that this collaboration will cover in its entirety, by 2026, the demand for Aspirin of 81 mg required by the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba.
The action reinforces the efforts of the BioCubaFarma business group and its companies to ensure the supply of vital medicines for the population, through international alliances based on complementarity and sustainability.
