Honoring International Women’s Day in cities around Colombia
Social organizations and feminist groups held the March 8 march in Colombia on March 15, a day of mobilization organized to raise awareness of the struggles for equal rights, the eradication of gender-based violence, and the recognition of women’s role in society.
The demonstrations took place a week after International Women’s Day (IWD), as in several cities across the country the commemoration of March 8 coincided with the legislative elections for the Senate and House of Representatives, leading feminist collectives to reschedule some of their activities.
Bogotá led the main 8M march
The main demonstration took place in Bogotá, organized by the group Somos un Rostro under the slogan “For care justice and a guaranteed life”.
The march began at 11:00 a.m. (local time) from the TransMilenio Minuto de Dios station, located at Avenida Calle 80 and Carrera 73A, and proceeded to Villa Luz Park.
The participating collectives noted that the event aims to raise awareness of demands for women’s rights, protection of life, and social recognition of care work.
Mobilizations in Various Cities
Activities for 8M in Colombia have spanned several days across different regions with marches, sit-ins, and cultural events. In Bucaramanga, a sit-in was held in San Pío Park against femicides and in support of labor rights; in Ibagué, the demonstration marched through the city to Murillo Toro Square; Pasto held a torchlight march from Bolívar Park; and in Manizales, a cultural event took place with activities at Los Yarumos Ecopark and in the Solferino neighborhood.
