Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her country’s long-standing stance against the economic and commercial blockade imposed on Cuba, noting that such measures do not affect governments, but rather the people directly.
Sheinbaum reported that during one of the approximately 20 phone calls she has had with U.S. President Donald Trump, she addressed the situation in Cuba and expressed Mexico’s position regarding the tightening of measures against the island.
She noted that Cuba has made efforts to open its economy in various areas and stated that this should be taken into account.
She reiterated that the Mexican government opposes blockades because, she stated, “they harm the people, not the governments,” and maintained that Mexico will continue to defend the self-determination of peoples, dialogue, and its historic solidarity with the Cuban people, while maintaining a relationship of respect and cooperation with the United States, even when differences exist on certain issues.
“We do not agree with blockades; they harm the people, not the governments… the Cuban people should not be punished, and dialogue should always be sought,” he stated.
With this position, Mexico reaffirms its doctrine of respect, sovereignty, and regional solidarity in the face of coercive policies against the island.
