Around 2,000 people took to the streets this Saturday afternoon in Bilbao in solidarity with Cuba, carrying Cuban and Basque flags, as well a number of Palestinian flags. Bilbao, an industrial port city in northern Spain, is the de facto capital of Basque Country.
The event was organized by Euskadi-Cuba, Hegoak, and Euskal Herria-Cuba Ekimena, and began at the Guggenheim Museum, proceeding to the Euskalduna Cultural Center, where Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez held a massive concert that evening.
The march proceeded along a street parallel to the Bilbao estuary and was led by two large flags—one from Cuba and one Basque ikurriña. Behind them was a banner reading “Cuba and the world without imperialism. No to the blockade.” Throughout the march, participants chanted slogans such as “Cuba yes, Yankees no,” “Long live Socialist Cuba,” “The United States is a terrorist,” “Euskal Herria against the blockade,” “Trump, you scoundrel, tear down the wall,” and “Down with imperialism.”
Once in front of the Euskalduna, the demonstrators once again cheered for Cuba and sang several well-known songs by Silvio Rodríguez, as well as “Hasta siempre” by Carlos Puebla, dedicated to Che. Finally, a statement was read describing the atrocities inflicted on the Cuban people by the blockade and concluding with a condemnation of the Yankee empire, of Zionism—which murders the Palestinian people—and of those who remain silent and allow two genocides to be taking place today: that of Palestine, bombed by Israel, and the slow genocide in Cuba, perpetrated by the United States.
