For decades now, it has become a constant pattern for corrupt figures, thieves, or terrorists to receive “political” asylum in the United States, on the sole condition that they have been unconditional allies of Washington throughout their careers.
Now it is Flavio Bolsonaro’s turn, a former far-right Brazilian presidential candidate who lost by 4.4 million votes to Luis Inácio Lula da Silva in the presidential runoff.
After learning the results and realizing he would not have immunity to evade the corruption charges against him, Flavio chose to flee to the United States, where he would be welcomed with all the honors his friends—convicted President Donald Trump and mythomaniac Secretary of State Marco Rubio—would bestow upon him.
Bolsonaro began his flight after Brazil’s Federal Police informed him on October 26 that he was required to surrender his passports—both his Brazilian passport and any others he possessed—due to a court order issued by Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is investigating him for alleged corruption and money laundering linked to online gambling.
The Federal Police reported that they were considering requesting a freeze on his assets following his flight. The measure would also include freezing the former presidential candidate’s bank accounts.
But let’s take a look at the three major cases before the Federal Supreme Court facing this ally of Trump and Rubio. An investigation is underway into money laundering and corruption in the financing of the film *Dark Horse*, a project about his father, Jair Bolsonaro.
Initial investigations indicate that he allegedly requested approximately 134 million reais (about $26 million) from banker Daniel Vorcaro (currently in pretrial detention) to finance the production, allegedly using funds of illicit origin. What a great effort by the son to clean up his father’s image!
The other case is the so-called Willer Tomaz case, which involves an investigation into a money-laundering network operating through digital betting platforms and international payment systems. In this scheme, suspicious financial transactions and the use of offshore accounts were detected, including those linked to the company Alcazar Holdings, where Flavio was listed as a senior advisor.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the freezing of assets worth $1.2 billion linked to attorney Willer Tomaz, considered one of the network’s main operators.
The third case involves currency evasion and the alleged illegal financing of his election campaign with funds from abroad, which constitutes a serious crime under Brazilian law. These investigations have gained momentum following his electoral defeat.
Eduardo, a former federal deputy and Flavio’s brother, left the country in March 2025 to avoid court orders in Brazil and has since taken refuge, as expected, in the United States.
The Bolsonaro family, until recently considered one of Brazil’s most influential families, has gone into hiding in the “paradise” for corrupt officials and terrorists, where—for now—they will not have to face charges for their crimes. Trump and Rubio are sheltering them.
Meanwhile, investigations into the two brothers continue to move forward in Brazil, and the possibility of new cases being opened against them cannot be ruled out.
In the next commentary, we’ll see how Flavio managed to escape from Brazil with help from Israel, the United States, and Argentina.
